The TCS Amsterdam Marathon lists among the world’s top runs and boasts the highest IAAF quality standard — Gold Label. The course partly follows the historic Olympic Marathon route and is famous for its views: the participants run past typical Dutch cottages and windmills. This year the Marathon distances gathered some 45,000 runners from 131 countries.
Background
The first Amsterdam Marathon took place on August 5, 1928 as part of the Summer Olympics. After that, no marathons were held until the run was restored in 1975. Since then it has been held annually (except for 1978).
The IAAF Road Race Label Events is a three-level system for road races assessment. It was developed in 2007 by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). In 2008, all leading international road runs were labeled. There exist 3 labels for assessment of field-and-track runs: golden, silver and bronze.
