On Wednesday, within the framework of the VI St. Petersburg International Gas Forum, representatives of PJSC Gazprom met with the management of the Algerian State Oil and Gas Company Sonatrach.
At the meeting, the Russian side was represented by Vitaly Markelov, Deputy Chairman of Gazprom's Management Committee and Andrey Fick, Managing Director and CEO of Gazprom International.
The Algerian delegation was headed by Salah Mekmouche, Sonatrach Vice President of Exploration and Production.
The parties discussed the progress of the joint project on exploration and development of El Assel oil and gas block in the eastern part of the Algerian Sahara. Gazprom and Sonatrach agreed to create a working group to study opportunities and to continue works on development of the fields discovered in the area as a result of exploration conducted in recent years. In addition, the working group will explore possibilities to improve cost effectiveness of the joint project.
Representatives of the companies also discussed the prospects of full-scale cooperation of Gazprom and Sonatrach; the parties are planning to draw a memorandum on establishing the Joint Coordinating Committee.
Gazprom International has been implementing the project on hydrocarbon exploration and development in El Assel block in the east of Algeria since 2009. Gazprom International is acting as the operator with a 49% share and with a 51% share belonging to Sonatrach Company.
During the exploration, significant amount of 2D and 3D seismic surveys was carried out. The obtained data were processed and interpreted along with the legacy seismic data; nine prospecting and appraisal wells were constructed.
Three fields were discovered as a result of drilling prospecting wells RSH-2, ZERN-1, and RSHN-1 in the course of exploration works. Additionally, Zemlet Er-Rekkeb field had been discovered previously.
This year, the last appraisal well within the exploration stage (RSH-3) was drilled and tested. A 3D seismic survey over the area of 350 km² at the Rhourde Sayah North field was completed. In addition, reports on evaluation of the fields discovered were prepared together with the development plans.
